Novak Djokovic Is Refused Entry into Australia over Vaccine Exemption
- ggm 5y agoHe's appealing. News sources in Australia state that his exemption is based on prior infection status but he was unable to show it was within 6months and this specific exemption is documented as required to be a recent one. Two independent, blinded medical review panels for the tennis organisers had accepted his claim. So, this also has a dimension of the Australian Government over-ruling a body, with delegated authority. I don't like this: It's happened before, when the border forces have declared children to be adults, and locked them up. Courtroom appeal revised their ages back down again. The Border forces have truly awesome powers to revoke a visa. It does have to respect due process in appeal but thats a rich-mans game. Most people have limited ability to deal with this. I don't like Djokovic's anti-vax stance, I am an Australian Citizen and I don't want him to be a high-profile Exempt person. But, how this is being done is not good, and makes me very uncomfortable. The current government looks to be reacting to popular mood, and behaving like a reactive populist party, not a government with a plan. We're 6 months out from an election, and I think this process is pretty bad. Djokovic is being held in a confinement facility which also has Refugees with (in some cases) over 9 years of arbitrary detention and denial of regugee status. I hate that even more. If this decision has the effect of making some tennis fans wake up to how absolutely awful the current governments treatment of refugees is, I would be tactically happy, but its modified happiness: this is a bad situation for everyone, Djokovic included.
