Compiz has been my daily driver for the past 10 years, I highly recommend it to everyone (make sure you use CompizConfig Settings Manager to configure it).
If you do try it out, please _please_ ignore all the gimmicky effects (yes, including burning windows)- they're a distraction from the pure utilitarianism that compiz offers.
