Sad :( wish more people embrace open systems
- zokula 5y ago
- thatswrong0 5y agoWho needs an “open system” when you can have blue texts
- mattl 5y agoLike what? There’s no realistic Linux phone and the alternative is an Android phone that doesn’t get updates after a couple years.
- aero-glide2 5y agoMany samsung phones get 4-5 years. Pixel too.
- mattl 5y agoAnd are those really open?
- aero-glide2 5y agoMore open. Not forced by Apple to use a single store.
- CameronNemo 5y agoPixel devices can have after market OS images flashed. Samsung devices are locked up.
- mattl 5y agoTeenagers just want a phone. Most don’t want to flash images.
- CameronNemo 5y agoI was just responding to your question.
- yftsui 5y agoThe apparent difference is security update only vs newer Android OS version. Most non flagship Samsung shipping today with Android 11 will only get Android 12 then security updates only. So technically Samsung only provide 1 year, if security update counts then Apple is still supporting iPhone 5s, a phone released in 2013.
- loosescrews 5y agoSailfish is great and the only device they have ever dropped support for got 7 years of updates. https://blog.jolla.com/jolla7/ https://blog.jolla.com/jolla7/
- mattl 5y agoTeenagers aren’t going to want a Sailfish phone.
- niij 5y ago> Sailfish X is currently available in the countries of the European Union, UK, Norway and Switzerland ("Authorized Countries") and the use of our website and services to purchase Sailfish X outside of the Authorized Countries is prohibited. Doesn't sound very "open".
- loosescrews 5y agoThat is only for a few proprietary bits (Android App Support, Predictive text input, MS Exchange support). Now, those features are very useful, but most of the OS is open source and the open source version is usable (without those features). They also don't stop people from outside of those countries from ordering it.
- raunak 5y agoI would rather a universal standard simple phone than open systems honestly in this case Even as an OSS believer I just love apple design too much to not support this :(
