The advantage of Wine is that it's more mature. The disadvantage is that Windows is possibly the least Unix-like operating system in popular use and the number of ugly hacks they have to use to make Linux do what Windows does will never cease to be a source of friction and heisenbugs.
Whereas macOS is a Unix, so Darling doesn't have to imitate all the eccentric behavior of the Windows kernel, it can just implement the API.
- KerrAvon 5y agoI’m not sure the similarity is a benefit — the systems are divergent in some of the fundamentals. It might be better if they were less similar so that the differences were more visible. There’s also libraries like GCD which GUI applications use and expect to work and have interesting interactions with pthreads. I’d guess it will be a while before they have simpler third-party apps working let alone something like Office. I see that they have the Coocotron examples working but Cocotron is the precise subset of the API that they’ve actually implemented so it’s not really indicative of the work in front of them.
