seriously doubt people make such strategy have graduated kindergarten.
it is the people in TSMC not the hardware that make the best chips.
china only needs to offer them better opportunity to work in mainland, it is happening at a fast rate.
- bhhaskin 5y agoExcept that isn't true at all. TSMC doesn't make their own chips. They make other people's chips. The foundry is what matters, and not the people. It's at least a 10 billion dollar and decade long construction project to build a foundry. Not to mention the company that makes the lithography machines (160 million each) has about a 2 year lead time.
- thewarrior 5y ago10 years is nothing for a nation state. China has trillions at its disposal.
- bhhaskin 5y agoBut 10 years is an eternity in tech. On top of that China already has chip foundries. No one uses them for anything important because they don't want their IP stolen. Taiwan's value to China isn't TSMC, although it would be a bonus to take it. The rest of the world however would lose a major asset. Which is why the US is starting to build new foundries.
- totalZero 5y agoBingo. If anything, destroying the Taiwanese fabs would strengthen Chinese chip hegemony.
- thewarrior 5y agoThere is no technology in which an eternal edge has been maintained. China has a billion people and trillions to throw at the problem. The laws of physics are the same for all. Once you know something works it’s only a matter of investing capital.
- robbedpeter 5y agoYeah, culture and social contexts don't matter at all. People and and institutions that steal and lie and cheat will be able to innovate and develop at exactly the same rate and level of quality.
- sudosysgen 5y agoThose are all issues that can be resolved with time and money, so yes.
