Breaking Out of the Box
- twic 5y agoI idly wonder if you could build a mildly box-escaping UI in the browser by making active use of the page title, and opening multiple tabs and using their titles. Both of these would be output-only, of course.
- whalesalad 5y agoI wonder if the horizontal scroll on mobile is part of breaking out of the box.
- itcrowd 5y agoI think it is. Along with the "A list apart" header on the top that is partially obscured by the fixed navigation pane and the title being too wide for the page.
- titusjohnson 5y agoPretty sure that's a stylistic choice, it's been like that for quite a while.
- extra88 5y agoNo, the horizontal scroll on mobile is only happening in this article, not on their home page or the previous article they published. I think it's because of lines like this:
navigator.windowControlsOverlay.getBoundingClientRect()
They need word-wrap: break-word; on there or something. I've seen other sites do the partially off-screen site name thing but not making the name fit the width of smaller viewports is odd.
- titusjohnson 5y agoSlightly off-topic but I love that A List Apart is still running. They were a mainstay for me early in my career, the Suckerfish Dropdown article in particular was a big deal to me. https://alistapart.com/article/dropdowns/ https://alistapart.com/article/dropdowns/
