NHS websites asking for DRM in Firefox and Chromium
Articles like https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/abdominal-aortic-aneurysm/ for example keep asking me to enable DRM.
Is this normal? I can't understand why a health website would require the use of proprietary DRM. The only video on there is educational, and plays fine with no DRM.
- majjam 5y agoSo I’m on mobile but iOS mobile firefox doesn’t have any issues. However there is a video at the bottom of the site. Are you on Linux and if so have you installed the DRM packs for firefox? Can you use it to view Netflix no trouble?
- tentacleuno 5y ago> Are you on Linux and if so have you installed the DRM packs for firefox? Nope. I haven't really had any need for DRM so I haven't installed it. I do use Linux, though.
- dchest 5y agoProbably their video player has DRM plugin enabled (https://player.support.brightcove.com/plugins/configuring-brightcove-player-drm.html https://player.support.brightcove.com/plugins/configuring-br...) just in case they need to publish a DRMed video and probes Firefox for DRM support for all videos, which in turn shows the message.
- tentacleuno 5y agoAhh, thank you! This seems about right. I was confused at first because the video played fine without DRM. This is curious. I wonder if there's another way to check for DRM without doing this.
- taubek 5y agoOn the URL that you have provided Chrome works without any issues, and Brave provides me with popup about DRM.
- tentacleuno 5y agoI'm not sure if Chrome maybe auto-accepts DRM?
- taubek 5y agoYes, it seems so. Here is there help article on this topic https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/4410268 https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/4410268. Here is what they say "By default, you can view protected content. For example, if you buy a movie on Google Play Movies, you can watch it in Chrome. If you don't want to watch protected content, you can block sites from playing it. When you try to play certain movies or music, you might get an error and the content won't play."
