GoboLinux Is a Linux Distro Unlike Any Other
- mateuszf 5y agoSounds a bit like NixOS.
- jqpabc123 5y agoYet another open source abandonware project in the making. Dozens of man-years of developer effort and productivity consumed by the technological dustbin and evaporated into the digital ether. Open source lacks direction and focus --- which is not an issue if your time has no value. But back in the real world, time is limited and is thus the most valuable thing you can spend. Spend wisely with the awareness that reality can not be defeated.
- 2Gkashmiri 5y agothe article says it is like 20 years old so why do you think the dev time has no value in this case? no one paid the dev/devs to build this, sure you can argue they could have spent their time elsewhere with better results and all that but the fact is, with open source, people do it as a passion of love. this is same as having a hobby of reading books or watching the paint dry. it doesn't have to be "if your time has no value" because for the devs, they chose to spend their time doing it and anyone else is free to pick up the slack if they choose.
- jqpabc123 5y agoTime is more valuable than money. You can always get more money but you can't get more time. How you choose to spend either is always a very personal choice. Spend wisely.
- jeffalyanak 5y agoYou're making the assumption that there is no value in the development itself. Tackling unique problems can be invaluable to building skills, can be a lot of fun, and can be relaxing. All of those things can be extremely valuable uses of one's time, even if you assume that the product itself had absolutely zero value to anyone.
- GekkePrutser 5y agoOn the contrary. It leads to new ideas. Open source has brought us substantial innovations over the years. On the distro side NixOS for example. Tiling window managers like i3 are another. If all development time is spent on something coordinated by a committee, we wouldn't see such pearls emerge. They'd consider it way too risky or too different from what they already have. And really all companies already use that centrally directed model. FOSS is a good counterbalance for this. That not all the work is receiving the attention it deserves doesn't really matter. And some ideas just don't work out but at least they were tried. IMO it's all good if it makes the developers and the people that do use it happy.
- pcdoodle 5y agoI like the root folder names. Linux always confused me with usr/home/lib/etc
