I was born in neighboring country - Moldova and we all knew that Elena was fraud, same way fraud as Brezhnev "wrote" Malaya Zemlya. My grandfather was Brezhnev personal chauffeur when Brezhnev was First Secretary of the Communist Party of Moldova. Brezhnev would get shitfaced at weekend party (banquette) and my grandfather would drive him back home, while Brezhnev was asleep on the back seat and carry him to his bed. Those type of people ruled 1/6 of earth.
One thought that still lingers in my mind after many years: what would happened to Russia, if Russians ended-up shooting the apparatus, the same way Romanians got rid of Ceausescu ?
- thriftwy 5y agoRussia already had too much shootings to expect that any further ones would improve things.
- AniseAbyss 5y agoRomania was never a superpower. It was a backwards irrelevant second rate country, I mean no offense just saying it as it is. What happened to Russia in the 1990s was such a humiliation and shock of epic proportions- think Weimar Republic. And the European Union wasn't going to save them with money. Turned out the old apparatus was actually better than the new democracy.
- flavius29663 5y agofor what it's worth, the EU didn't "save" Romania with money. The net cash inflows are about 1-2% of GDP each year, while Romania grew at around 5% for 2 decades. They did indeed saved Romania by forcing it to modernize in order to get in.
- AniseAbyss 5y agoFree movement of workers allowed millions of Romanians to work in the EU.
- flavius29663 5y agotrue, and that helped the economy somewhat (money send back) - but also slowed progress because of the brain drain. My point was not that EU didn't help Romania, it obviously did. The largest factor was not the cash though.
