Ask HN: Where can one donate to help slow global warming?
Or stated otherwise - if you have hundreds of dollars to spare, what’s the best way you can spend it to help fix the climate crisis?
- acqbu 5y agoI am a big fan of Peter's Singer list of highly effective charities. For climate change related organisations, please see: https://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/causes-to-support/tackle-climate-change/ https://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/causes-to-support/tackle-c...

- fuzzfactor 5y agoDepending on the currency you deal with and how it is acquired, it could turn out to be calculated more effective not to have accumulated the currency in question to begin with rather than to donate it afterward, which does amount to a somewhat indirect approach. You would have to do the math for your own particular situation.

- hazza_n_dazza 5y agoI think global warming is caused by spending! Maybe plant a garden? or contribute time to a landcare (tree planting) group?
- gregjor 5y agoGlobal climate change is a global problem. It can’t be fixed by small individual actions or donating to charities, however well-meaning. Slowing climate change will require international action and huge social changes. You can not own a car, not fly, not use an air conditioner, don’t eat meat, etc., but as one person out of billions your individual efforts are negligible. You can support politicians who promise to implement large-scale change but that process is slow and corrupt.
- prirun 5y ago> Slowing climate change will require international action and huge social changes. Completely agree, and I don't think it will ever happen. I can't imagine Americans ditching their monster trucks and SUVs, turning off their AC, not using a clothes dryer, not paving the world with concrete, and so on. And developing economies are going to all eventually want the same luxuries we enjoy, making the problem that much worse. I could be wrong, but I don't see humanity solving this. We're too self-centered and greedy as a species to do things for the greater good. As was well-said in "The Matrix", we are best compared to a virus, taking over and consuming everything. Happy New Year! :-)
- WheelsAtLarge 5y agoI don't think we can buy our way out of global warming. What we need to do is reduce our use of carbon based fuels which means all of us need to look for ways to reduce our energy consumption. A few ideas, drive less(travel less in general), use less AC/heater, find ways to re-use what we have rather than buy new, waste less food and on and on... It all starts with us. If enough people reduce their energy consumption and push for economic and political change then there's a chance to change global warming. Donating money and hoping someone else will fix the problem will not change things.
