- fikama 5y agoWhat do you mean by "document-oriented google Sheets" - could you specify? I'm curious
- xyzzy_plugh 5y agoI take it to mean cells in the notebook sense, not the spreadsheet sense.
- Kinrany 5y agoIn Sheets you can store a formula "A1 + 1" in cell A2. In a document-oriented editor you'll store formula "p1 + 1" in paragraph p2.
- pizza 5y agoWonder if dockerized cocalc + sageworksheets / jupyter lab is what you're looking for
- Kinrany 5y agoRegular Jupyter notebooks are missing two important things: 1. Sheets hide formulas most of the time 2. Formulas in sheets are reactive, updating one cell immediately updates all the cells that depend on the first
- pizza 5y agobesides "show hn", and "ask hn", there should be a 3rd category: "inspire hn" where we open-source and workshop brilliant ideas that are just waiting for some genius to come along and implement them. @dang ? :) a spreadsheet ui for a higher-order jupyter notebook where each cell is a jupyter notebook or cell, and calculations flow into and out of cells like Monads or Arrows, would be genius !
- g8oz 5y agoObservablehq notebooks are reactive but JS only. Jupyter is becoming a standard but the lack of a DAG for reactivity and the difficulty in version controlling them are serious limitations.
- tuvan 5y agoJulia ecosystem has an awesome tool called Pluto that solves this. https://github.com/fonsp/Pluto.jl https://github.com/fonsp/Pluto.jl it is still young but actively developed. I am especially looking forward to their upcoming 2D Grid layout option, which will essentially turn it into a code driven reactive dashboard.
