People capable of building novel videogames are way rarer than people capable of doing CS research. CS research is just a job. You can suck at it and still achieve something. Novel videogames are rare. I can count novel videogames with my hands. They probably require development skills, luck, some unique set of experiences, lateral thinking and tons of willpower.
