In my personal experience money loses a ton of utility once you have adequate food, shelter and a book to read. Expensive objects or experiences can bring temporary joy, which is fine, but they rarely make a difference in daily contentment. I personally aim for the latter, which appears to be more influenced by the quality of our relationships and our capacity to look forward and enjoy the small victories: a smiling spouse, a cup of tea, a sleeping child.
