Good points, and I too found the tone to be overly libertarian - as if the author made all his life decisions to prioritize personal happiness over the collective.
No doubt his opinions are shaped by background: He is publishing in a conservative website, was former policy advisor to Sen Josh "Stop the Steal" Hawley, and works for the Heritage Foundation - a conservative think tank.
However, rhetoric and politics aside, his central argument that "Stanford's policies are based on incomplete information and may be too restrictive. Thus I will not be coming to campus" seems to me quite valid. If school is to be done remotely, there is no reason to be in Palo Alto. And if the situation is changing on a weekly basis, it is prudent to observe.
He could have said it in a lot fewer words!

- dangus 5y agoDigging in to that central argument he’s making, it still doesn’t make sense to me. If you read the Stanford bulletin linked in the article, there isn’t a requirement to return to campus for the first two online weeks. > I’m a student currently away from the Stanford campus for the winter break. Do I have to return as soon as residences reopen, or can I wait until later? > If you are healthy, you are encouraged to come back to campus on-time and get settled. You can return to campus later if you choose to, but we advise against waiting until in-person classes are about to begin. This is because if you return on-schedule, test positive upon arrival and need to isolate for at least 10 days, you will be able to continue your coursework during the online instruction period. Once in-person instruction begins, any accommodations for those in isolation will need to be arranged with individual instructors at their discretion. Ultimately, Stanford is basically giving you the option of two extra weeks of time to spend wherever the heck you want (if you want to take that risk), and this guy is complaining that it’s making him “miserable.”
