I witnessed this in a business setting many years ago, all I can say is that the result for the person guilty of defamation can be absolutely brutal, both in financial and social terms. I am not the kind of person who would want to do this to someone else, no matter how stupid they have been in this case. But this matter isn't just between you and them, is it? I gather from your description that they are trying to deceive an entire community, and for a grand total in millions probably. I think I would pursue the lawsuit to get this sorted out.
