I don't get it. In the OP he shows that the Cray compiler handles this feature. So why not just have the customer use that compiler? Yes there's a license fee but presumably someone from Cray can get a good price on the Cray compiler if they have a customer satisfaction issue.

It might be that to avoid compiler implementation specific issues, they test code against multiple compilers.
