I think you mean “the actual fact of the downward secular trend in crime is to Republicans what climate change also is to Republicans: an inconvenient fact...” The difference is that Rs have more support from centrist corporate capitalist elites in and out of the media on crime than on climate change.

    It depends on the time frame. Yes, there is less street crime now than there was in the 19th century. Maybe even less than there was in the 1970s. But it is a real fact that in many cities there is more street crime now than in the low point in the late 1990s. The number of murders in Philadelphia brought up by the author, for example.
