Blockchains Are Too Old to Be the Beginning of Anything
- wmf 5y agoOverall I agree with this except: The beginning of the smartphone is very easy to pin down. The release of the original iPhone on June 29th 2007. Eh, there was 15 years between IBM Simon and the iPhone.
- leifg 5y agoMmmh interesting, I always assumed the term smartphone was basically a term coined with the iPhone. I should have probably called it something like "the modern smartphone". I didn't want to write iPhone because that's not a category.
- wmf 5y agoKind of playing devil's advocate here, if we ever see a good blockchain it will probably redefine the terminology/history like the iPhone did. Like how "digital cash" was a thing from ~1990 to 2008 and was replaced by "cryptocurrency" because Bitcoin was such a qualitative improvement.
- leifg 5y agoMaybe but I feel the term is currently so much in the public that it's unlikely to change its definition. What I think is more likely, that the buzzword web3 will evolve into something that has nothing to do with blockchains or even tokens.
