I grew up 15 minutes from Minneapolis, and have lived & worked in the Southern California area as well as up and down the Northeast (from Boston to DC). It's not that people are specifically ignorant of the Midwest, it's that they're insular and myopic, and generally ignorant of anything outside of their regions and vacation spots (Hawaii and Florida respectively, sometimes Western Europe).
