From my point of view there is a hierarchy of swe’s at apple.
On the top are iOS devs - the one who are the closest to the users and execs. Next are macos, hardware, backend. After all of that you have IST eng (i hope that i remember the name of the org correctly) and not really people from Apple’s point of view: contractors.
