Personal data should be auto-delete after a few months by default (2018)
- zapdrive 5y agoData laws are like gun laws. Only the good guys care about them.
- frankbreetz 5y agoEveryone cares about them if they are enforced appropriately
- thephyber 5y agoThis is bad logic. Gun laws are still useful when prosecuting a person who wasn’t initially arrested for violating the gun law. This is a lot like how seatbelt laws are enforced most of the time. And as the sibling commenter mentioned, the details are in how a law is enforced. If the law is simply too difficult to prosecute, then we can’t expect it to be used effectively.
- Gigachad 5y agoId rather only some entities abusing my data rather than everyone.
- spoonjim 5y agoI get a lot of value from personal data that has been stored for decades. I recently went to buy a book on Amazon and Amazon told me I had bought this book 10+ years ago. Sure enough I looked on my shelves and found it.
- cblconfederate 5y agoThey don't need your personal data for that
- ummonk 5y agoThe history of your past purchases is highly personal data.
- gnabgib 5y agoThere may be value in that, although is it not mostly for them? Once the book arrives and you recognize you've already read - you return and that's at Amazon's expense. I highly recommend you do a personal information request from Amazon.. there is an astounding amount of data in there. Companies that have bought you as an ad target, Alexa/Ring/Music/Smile/AppStore/PrimeVideo interactions, including country/IP requested from (why can't you see what you've watched in PrimeVideo and/or hide it? They clearly have the data), every credit card/address/coupon code you've ever used. Everything you've ever searched for (by far the largest file).
- cblconfederate 5y agoInstead of coming up with more busywork for developers, disallow real names and storing of addresses / payment info. Fix ancient tax laws to not require storing financial info for decades. Move all personal info to the browser.
- nickff 5y ago>"Fix ancient tax laws to not require storing financial info for decades. " The government wants to be able to go back in time so they can prosecute tax evasion and 'money laundering'. They also want someone else to take care of collating and warehousing the data for them. The laws aren't outdated, they are just incompatible with maintaining privacy in the 'connected' era.
- cblconfederate 5y agoso, they are outdated
- nickff 5y agoThe laws are relatively recent; how are they outdated? I think they have significant flaws, but that doesn't make them outdated. Governments have plenty of laws and regulations which cause tremendous collateral damage.
- prirun 5y agoI'd prefer companies not collect data that isn't absolutely essential to provide their service rather than auto-deleting. Especially in today's ransomware world, collecting and storing unnecessary customer data has become a liability, not an asset.
- more_corn 5y agoHow about my personal data is private by default unless I choose to share it not the reverse? Opt out privacy is total fucking bullshit. Let’s start there.
