Our Show HN post was strongly criticized, here are our lessons learned

- PragmaticPulp 5y agoHN doesn’t take kindly to affiliate-link self promotion. Few tech communities would, honestly. You can argue that you have algorithms and multiple sources and call it a Rotten Tomatoes style site, but it’s still an affiliate site that recycles tainted reviews from other sources in an attempt to capture affiliate payouts. If you really want to produce something valuable, do your own reviews. You’ll need to demonstrate and establish trust, but recycling content from other websites is not a good way to do that. Create some actual value for the reader. Don’t just front-run other people’s content in hopes of cluttering up search results so you can capture a piece of the affiliate revenue.
- hubraumhugo 5y agoThanks for the feedback. We will definitely introduce our own review system in the future, but I still think that there is room for a trusted review aggregator. Most people spend hours doing product research and visit many different websites before they have the confidence to buy. Take Honey as an example of what we want to do: People use it to run coupon codes as it's faster than going through all the websites and copy/pasting themselves. We're doing a similar thing for product research: Instead of visiting many websites to do all the tedious work yourself, you can check our analysis of what the internet thinks about a product.
- JennyBaum 5y agoThere should be less aggregators on the web. Regurgitating content from other sites only clutters the web. Look, I understand you think having a scraper running and auto-filling your site is neat and will make you rich beyond measure. It won't. Read the last two lines of the first comment again: trust is key, and so far you haven't demonstrated you actually understand that.
