Hayek had a belief that society couldn't be engineered through knowledge, but that's far from a settled fact. With the rise of MMT, it may be that Hayek was largely wrong. Critical thinking would indicate that, while his argument is compelling, there isn't enough evidence to have a definitive opinion either way.
- jmeister 5y agoThat’s one implication he drew out of this thinking. But his broader project, along with his close friend Popper’s, was grappling with the questions —- What is science? what is “social science”? What are the limits of rationality? —- partly in response to the popularity of the theories of Freud and Marx in prewar Vienna.
- halpert 5y agoI think the broader point still stands: Hayek, or anyone else for that matter, doesn't really know the limits of rationality.
