It's certainly messy because it tries to mimic the hardware 1:1, but there are more ergonomic alternatives.
Some examples: Bitwig's Grid (https://www.bitwig.com/the-grid/ https://www.bitwig.com/the-grid/) and Patcher in FL Studio (https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/plugins/Patcher.htm https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-onli...). Afaik there is no equivalent in Ableton which I really miss sometimes (unless you consider Max4Live which is on a different level of usability).

- PaulDavisThe1st 5y agoWhat do you think that Rack "tries to mimic [ from hardware ]" that Bitwig's grid does not? Are you just refering to the knobs etc.? If so, that's not in Rack's domain at all: module developers control their module's appearance, and there some which are extremely skeuomorphic, and some which are not. Bitwig's Grid is uniform and consistently non-skeuomorphic, but is also (IIUC) not open to 3rd party device/module development.
