I'm not really surprised. A lot of children spend their time on TikTok. I've never understood it, myself. Is it just the dopamine?

- themodelplumber 5y agoThe expression turnaround effect is way faster and creative tools more accessible than other popular platforms. It practically weaponized the reaction video. Speaking of one subcommunity of adults on TikTok, I've never seen a better anti-cult tech tool. You can show a respected cult leader speaking and give the Larry David "eh" shakey hand and just destroy the impact of the cult's carefully-prepared video. So a lot of orthodox actually stick around and are welcomed to consider some really interesting counter-cult thoughts and responses. You can tell they're watching when publishers share the comments they get. Well, and also when cult leaders frantically encourage people to get knowledge from approved sources... The overall presentation effect is nearer to realtime compared to traditional video platforms, so TikTokers can react to things faster while _also_ giving it a little more thought and creativity than the average streamer. You get the sensory effect of quick, easy to consume video plus the de facto emphasis on creative scripting and editing that puts just enough care into the approach. (At the same time it's Tencent, so anytime I see a video of PRC women shocked at the US homeless population I'm reminded of the very real possibility that it's been amplified via state input.)
- duddyhegfy 5y agoThe recommendation algorithm bears some mentioning too. Western apps and media love forcing pet projects down my throat from lgbt content I don't care about to blm riot apologism. TikTok made a few recommendations on those topics to me and then got the hint they I didn't care about them and just wanted to get back to memes. Similarly, TikTok noticed that while I avoid politics I liked memes making fun of Trump and it adapted to this quirk fairly quickly. TikTok in my opinion is easily the least preachy media app and it's refreshing to use because of that.
