Vaccine-derived immunity often outperforms immunity from natural infection. For COVID-19, it looks like this is true, but not by nearly as much as we'd like.

That is, we know of many vaccines where the protection from vaccination is greater than the protection from prior infection. We can only know about the superiority of vaccination to prior infection in aggregate, but the effect is real.
