I presume you mean comments on social media and not comments in source code. I only write comments when I feel that I can make a contribution by commenting. Once a HN post becomes more than a page or so, I generally find that somebody has already written what I would have written, so I don't add to it. Specific to HN, I find that subsets of comments on comments explore various tangents of interest to some posters. These can be very interesting, although sometimes I feel they would be better handled as a fresh thread.
