The Ways Shutting Off 3G Is Going to Suck for Your Car and You
- milderworkacc 5y agoI get the feeling that as consumer goods get “smarter” that this is going to happen more and more frequently as various dependencies are retired or shut down or part of a messy M&A transaction that leads to them being forgotten. Right to repair is one thing, whether to you that mean the availability of parts and schematics or even unlocked bootloaders and available firmware, but right-to-a-continuous-service is a very tricky one! How we start that conversation around who pays for it, for how long, and how to manage conflicts, I have no idea.
- SOLAR_FIELDS 5y agoHaving some legislation mandating product support for X years after purchase would be a good place to start.
- voakbasda 5y agoShutting down a service should force the release of the specs required to reproduce it. Require services of certain classes/longevity to register said specs in escrow.
- olliej 5y agosurprised, but at the same time not surprised. Something like the radio would be a logical piece to make trivially replaceable. It didn’t take a genius to see that 3g would be gone in far less time that the car is expected to operate. More stupid was cars built after LTE, etc not supporting those technologies already. But then car manufacturers are known for cutting costs regardless of long term impact.
