It’s really hard to find a USB C charger from a reputable brand right now. I ordered an Apple 100w and it’s delayed til March.
I imagine that’s one of the drivers behind Apple’s retreat from USB-C.
- detaro 5y agoIt seems pretty unlikely that Apple of all companies struggles to make USB-C products but has no problems making non-USB-C equivalents.
- gumby 5y agoYeah, Apple drove USB adoption with the iMac despite cries of “incompatibility!” at the time.
- wmf 5y agoApple hasn't retreated from USB-C in any meaningful way.
- duffyjp 5y agoFWIW, I'm using a Dell charger at home with a new 16" Macbook Pro and that works just fine. I think it's only 65 watts, but it's never been insufficient. Their website shows they're available in just a couple days.
- thebean11 5y agoAre you referring to the new magsafe connector? That cable has USB-C on the other end, and the laptops still support charging on any of the 3 USBC ports they have.
- watermelon0 5y agoYou can use USB-C ports for charging, but it only supports up to 96W. If you want to use 140W charger, you will need to use MagSafe. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212755 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212755
- thebean11 5y agoYup, but I believe that only affects fast charging and the laptop can run at "full blast" on 96W.
- gumby 5y agoThat’s only because the current Power Delivery spec doesn’t go above 100 W. IIRC the latest spec goes up to 200 W but I’m not sure it has been ratified and I doubt there is any silicon available for it.
- gumby 5y ago> I imagine that’s one of the drivers behind Apple’s retreat from USB-C What retreat? The new MacBook Pros have a MagSafe cable that has type C at the other end and uses Power Delivery so can be used with a non-Apple brick. You can also just use a USB C cable plugged into any of the Thunderbolt ports.
