This is from Nov 19th and this isn't some new tech [4] or kept in super secrecy. The polio vaccine was developed by virologist Jonas Salk on cells of a 31 year old Henrietta Lacks [1] who died in 1951 from cervical cancer (and that's the source of cells - these were taken without her consent as wikipedia states). As a human being she's dead for 70 years but biologically her cells are keeping her in a sense, alive.
Cell lines [2] are being used in various research techniques. And the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine uses HEK 293 cell line (from aborted in 1970s female fetus kidney cells [3]) to grow adenovirus which is then used as a tool that makes possible the crucial information to be delivered into our bodies, with the instruction how immune system should fight the coronavirus when we get infected.
Moderna and Pfizer used same cells in the initial research on the vaccine but as article says, they opted out from using these in mass production. Russian Sputnik V vaccine also uses HEK 293 line while J&J vaccine PER.C6 line originating from retinal cells.
If anything, I'd be more concerned about chimpanzee adenovirus that comes from our distant "cousins" than this aborted human fetus kidney cells which provided HEK 293 line. But that's my personal snarky opinion, as a layman. Vaccines are still our main weapon here, next to compliance with basic hygiene rules (which many still have troubles with); the effective drug therapy is about to be provided. Anyway, I'm waiting for my 3rd Pfizer which is due mid of January.
