Very interesting.
Key takeaway for the next few Ruby v3.x the focus will be very much on increasing performance over and above much language improvement, which admittedly is already pretty great.
Matz also framed the idea of the Ruby UX, which has historically come from language design, but for which the future is in supporting tools.
Specifically adding static typing to Ruby, they have been very intentional to keep things DRY and to add this through smart support of tooling for text editors / IDE’s and this is set to continue. He also implied the approach of using a separate file to add static typing can enable backward comparability potentially back to Ruby 2.6 .
Ruby grants as well as a community challenge called “Shootout”; to encourage the community to help with improving fundamental speed of the language.
