Synapse is bloated and mostly good for very large organisations.
Use conduit.rs or dendrite.
I use conduit and it takes a couple of MB ram even while I’m in large rooms
- xvilka 5y agoOfficial server should have never been in Python anyway. Not a proper language for the network server. They should have adopted Go or Rust servers as the official ones, and pour resources there instead.
- mst 5y agoSynapse was about proving the concept.
- xvilka 5y agoWell, they proved it, time for it to be dropped, and focus on the production-level implementation. But it's still[1] the recommended one. [1] https://matrix.org/docs/guides/introduction#how-can-i-get-my-own-server https://matrix.org/docs/guides/introduction#how-can-i-get-my...
- mst 5y agoI sympathise with your aggravation but they're balancing doing that while not trying to migrate the existing user base too early and keeping supporting people with production workloads. Fundamentally they've 'lucked' into a 'nice problem to have' type situation here, and I get how annoying it is - I was freenode staff during a period where the irc<->matrix bridging was unexpectedly popular enough to be a 'nice problem to have' for everybody involved and the author of the blog post we're discussing probably remembers some sharp words on my part during the process - but frankly on balance I'm mostly impressed.
- kuon 5y agoLast time I checked critical features were not supported, like read receipts.
- teitoklien 5y agoI use conduit to run multiple rooms, read receipts have been working just fine.
- kuon 5y agoI will give conduit another look if I ever try to setup a server again. I am quite active in the rust community and maybe I could also participate.
- teitoklien 5y agogoodluck!
- emptysongglass 5y agoDo bridges such as the discord puppet bridge work?
- timokoesters 5y agoI'm not sure about that one, but most bridges should work, see https://gitlab.com/famedly/conduit/-/blob/next/APPSERVICES.md#tested-appservices https://gitlab.com/famedly/conduit/-/blob/next/APPSERVICES.m...
- teitoklien 5y agoWoah, I just realised you're timokoesters, Thanks a lot for creating conduit ! :D
- teitoklien 5y agoNot sure, but i run a few custom matrix bots on some rooms hosted on conduit, They work fine, although I’m not sure if discord bridge works
- jalada 5y agoHeads up for anyone thinking about trying out a homeserver or two. To my knowledge there is no way of moving from one piece of homeserver software to another. So for example if you start with conduit you're stuck with it. I think there are a bunch of plans all over the place to mitigate this, but I don't think they're there yet.
