The vaccines are pretty great. I am happy to believe that if a strain of COVID occurs which the vaccines are less effective against, then the strain will necessarily be less severe. This is plausible because the vaccines target the spike protein. While it is too early to say definitively—evidence so far seems contradictory—Omicron may be such a mutation.
