The Case Against Work-Life Balance: Owning Your Future
- outsomnia 5y agoI am not sure what is the use of this wordy screed on "Work / Life balance" when it does not contain the words "wife" or "children".

- UncleMeat 5y ago> Sacrificing your potential to comfort isn’t a hedge against an early death – it IS an early death Ridiculous. I'm so tired of people not only telling me that working for a large corporation and then retiring early to support my family and achieve other goals like travel and hobbies makes me a bad person. It demonstrates a total lack of empathy for people who aren't like the author of this piece. > I’m urging you, especially at the dawn of your career, to instead choose life over balance, and make the work so meaningful that you wouldn’t want it to exist as a distinct concept. This person works at freaking Palantir. Tell me again how their work is so meaningful.
- hulitu 5y agoPalantir is no more different than Facebook, Google or Microsoft. Some people do not care about other peoples lives.
- UncleMeat 5y agoAnd would people working at Facebook, Google, or Microsoft describe their work as "so meaningful that you wouldn’t want it to exist as a distinct concept [from your life]"? I work at one of these companies and I'm the sort of person who wants to retire early that TFA thinks is resigning myself to an early death. I'm not arguing that Palantir is uniquely evil. I'm saying that working at Palantir is definitely not using your skills to maximally improve the quality of the world.
