Machine to Play Game of Nim (1940) [pdf]
- GeorgeRichard 5y agoAt the 1940 New York World's Fair Westinghouse displayed a machine, the Nimatron, that played Nim. From May 11, 1940, to October 27, 1940, only a few people were able to beat the machine in that six-week period; if they did, they were presented with a coin that said Nim Champ. It was also one of the first-ever electronic computerized games. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nim&oldid=1056951148 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nim&oldid=1056951...
- Someone 5y agoIt makes sense this was one of the first computerized games. The mathematical analysis of Nim (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nim#Mathematical_theory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nim#Mathematical_theory) is easier than even that of tic-tac-toe (where you more or less have to write out the full game tree to analyse the game. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tic-tac-toe#Strategy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tic-tac-toe#Strategy), making it easier to program.
- shagie 5y agoIn the basement of my parents' house is a plastic "Dr. Nim" game that I played with as a kid. It was slightly frustrating that it was able to beat me with just plastic (as a kid). https://youtu.be/pRUB0HvUItA https://youtu.be/pRUB0HvUItA I understand it now and the how it works. https://www.turingtumble.com https://www.turingtumble.com is a neat modern version of it (well, that and a lot more). https://community.turingtumble.com/t/dr-nim-on-turing-tumble/1536 https://community.turingtumble.com/t/dr-nim-on-turing-tumble...
