If you fake a test result then you've committed fraud in a foreign country. If you take a real test, are positive, and travel anyway then you're knowingly violating the law and there is a non zero chance you'll be caught. I don't see how it is theatre when you admit that it achieved its aim of having you and your wife take a test pre- travel.
