"Excitingly, the introduction of scarcity through NFTs doesn’t mean that access to the underlying media is limited, as it would be with paywalls or paid digital downloads. The actual media underpinning NFTs can remain public goods, available to be consumed by anyone at no cost. Those who think this undermines the scarcity of NFTs (“right-click and save”) fundamentally miss the point."
Call me skeptical, but how do NFTs change the situation for creators as described here?
If content is freely available, most consumers won't pay. If nothing limits access to the content, there is no artificial scarcity.
Even if there are paywalls, the content will be pirated as we see with copyrighted content today.
More wealthy superfans can support budding creators now through tips, Patreon, donations, buying merchandice, etc.
Spending cryptocurrecy to "buy" a digitally-signed URL does not seem that different from buying a wet-signed album or box set except the NFT is not tangible and possibly more difficult to resell.
