I've seen bad press about game developers for quite a while, and I've increasingly seen that the explanation is corporate greed. But if its greed, why are game developers able to get significantly higher pay and quality of life by working elsewhere? Why are video game execs more greedy than any other software company? Is the tech/entertainment industry more scummy than the tech/business industry, at least among its leadership?
I know nothing about this industry, but it seems like the margins for a game are extremely low. People balk at the $60+DLC prices, but you can get high quality games for $20 or less if you just pretend to live a year or so in the past. Is this not a confounding explanation for the shady stuff the game industry does, like lottery-style mechanics, repetitive franchises, and poor work-culture?
Having said all this, developers should absolutely get more bargaining power at their studios. If this increases the price I ultimately see, so be it.

People will accept lower pay (and even allow themselves to fall into a lot of bad working conditions) for making games because its actually pretty enjoyable a lot of the time. Not to mention the starry eyed kids that will accept just about anything to work in games.
