5% pay cut??? What the heck, I've never heard of that. What's the point?

  1.5% merit increase minus 6.2% inflation = 4.7% lower value this year vs last year.

    You made it sound like they lowered your salary because you weren't performing well.

      They effectively did - my salary will buy 4.7% fewer things next year than it did this year.
