Facebook will prevent, not create, the ‘metaverse’
- saurik 5y agoI think I strongly agree with this article, but I'd have to pay to find out for sure; ironically, I mostly don't think that would be worth it explicitly because I already believe myself to agree with the article (and thereby will gain nothing from reading it ;P). But, yeah... the entire premise of "the Metaverse" (note my typographic decision to use a capital M) is that it should be like "the Internet": a singular concept represented by a proper noun. If you have competing internets that are somehow incompatible, then they have each failed to become the Internet; even back in the 80s people got this: the premise was that, if there were ever two internets, someone would figure out how to connect them together to achieve a single "the Internet", due to the open and flexible technology stack. Facebook, in contrast, is all about creating walled gardens, and only pays lip service to the concept of an internet... they are the last company I could ever imagine building or even participating in "the Metaverse", and are much more likely to do everything in their power to prevent such a thing from existing.
