I never got the love for Pompidou. In my opinion it’s an eyesore in a way that can’t be justified by somehow being practical. Living in the neighborhood for a couple of years did not change that impression.
Not to cast shade on the architect(s); I understand these things are subjective.
- eternalban 5y agoThey said that (sans "practical") about the Eifel Tower too, back in the day. [edit: this quote is too delish: "a barbaric industrial object that even the Americans wouldn’t build it."]
- Veen 5y agoThey did, but I can't imagine that 100 years hence the Pompidou Centre will have the recognition or symbolism that the Eiffel Tower has today. The Eiffel Tower is iconic; the Centre Pompidou less so.
- eternalban 5y ago100 years from now, who knows, maybe our machine overlords will like it as a priceless example of "early humanoid Machine Romanticism".
- bryanrasmussen 5y agodo you have some metric that can determine the Eiffel Tower is indeed iconic and the Pompidou Centre not at all, or is it just based on the fact that one has lasted a long time?

- AvocadoPanic 5y agoNumber of souviner models sold, or refrigerator magnets?
- cm2187 5y agoBy that standard it means there are no ugly buildings. There obviously are.
- 3np 5y agoI was considering the Eiffel Tower as I wrote that but at this point it feels more like a relic of the past that doesn’t make sense to view through a contemporary lens.
- kingcharles 5y agoIt's definitely subjective. As a kid wandering Paris I used to think WTF is this thing? Then as an adult I think "C'est incroyable!" The Millennium Dome is also one of my favourite pieces of architecture. I adore it and hate that it is called The O2 these days. This is still happening though: "View of the Millenium Dome" - Spelled Wrong Since 1999!
