Vehicle emission declines decreased deaths, study finds
- ekianjo 5y agoSounds like somebody did a single-variable analysis of the situation. I'd be very curious to see how they can isolate in full honesty the results to a single factor.
- Proven 5y agoNo shit. Staying at home doing nothing while you receive gov assistance fights pollution. The questions is at what cost. Seems bogus like most enviro studies. 10,000 lives saved - if true at all - is insignificant in a large country such as the US.
- sbennettmcleish 5y agoInteresting that for a largely US focused article the stock image is of Perth, AU - https://www.google.com/maps/@-31.9678004,115.8467131,376a,35y,180h,44.85t/data=!3m1!1e3 https://www.google.com/maps/@-31.9678004,115.8467131,376a,35... :)
- mateo1 5y agoThe associated increased cost of transportation probably caused deaths as well.
- addicted 5y agoThis is almost certainly wrong.
- conception 5y agoI was curious and looked it up. Couldn’t find a great source but this - https://www.wqad.com/article/news/local/drone/8-in-the-air/the-average-car-now-costs-25449-how-much-was-a-car-the-year-you-were-born/526-a9fa74c1-9ee2-4561-a6a2-0b596a3a4bf0 https://www.wqad.com/article/news/local/drone/8-in-the-air/t... in my five minutes of googling and various anecdotes agreeing that for the most part inflation adjusted average price of cars has never really changed. It’s always been about 20k until the 80s and then bumped up to about 26k.
- aaron695 5y agoOf course. A large amount as well. This is not addressed in the journal article. The news article is also bullshit, it's not lives saved AND $$$$ saved. The $$$$ is mostly from the lives saved. I would be very surprised if in the USA the cost to lives was the same order of magnitude as saved. In developing countries definitely. But who know for the USA since they left it out.
- bigmattystyles 5y agoWhy can my brain not parse that title?
- Miiko 5y agoBecause it's intentionally constructed in a way that makes it impossible to parse before you read the article... well, at least I got such impression. ;) "Declines in vehicle emission decreased deaths, study finds" would be much better title IMHO
