Maybe not what you asked for :-) but.. I wish I'd had The AWK Programming Language when I was 10 or so. Chapter 1 covers the essentials in a way a child could appreciate, I think. And already you can do very useful stuff. From there the step up to a proper, general language is not a big one. If there's a better-written programming book of any kind, I'd love to see it. There's so much to learn, not just from the content, but from the masterly, friendly way it's presented.
