I'm assuming this is snark, but I admit that the statement "where would we be without Apple" isn't necessarily the strongest argument for better science education--did the author put Apple in the same basket as gene therapy? That's not to say Apple hasn't raised the bar of industrial design (and made some folks very rich), but I'm not sure that Apple is a critical piece of Anerican's science landscape.
