This is well understood and not controversial. These bizarre and dehumanizing stories are never, ever rooted in concrete evidence. When lurid tales of citizens being banned from laughing or copying Kim Jong Un's coat or whatever are published, you'll never see any sort of primary document (a law, a public advisory, whatever) referenced. Our view of North Korea is shaped exclusively by "sources say." We're supposed to believe that this oppression is all-encompassing, but so perfectly obscured that it evades all objective documentation.
