Over 91% Democrats vaccinated, while only 60% Republicans have taken one shot
- lulzseccing 5y agoGreat - sounds like the vaccine should protect you. Now leave us the fuck alone.
- basicplus2 5y agoin other news, Republicans get more Darwin awards
- masonic 5y agoNon paywall version of the referenced NYT article: https://news.yahoo.com/omicron-threatens-red-america-133806868.html https://news.yahoo.com/omicron-threatens-red-america-1338068... The title, unsurprisingly, totally misrepresents the underlying data. None of the vaccination stats are connected to actual voter registrations -- it's all smoke and mirrors sampling. It also doesn't contrast Covid-caused death rates vs all-cause death rates. The study author says: "I have attempted to estimate how many actual GOP vs. Dem voters have died of COVID based on the county-level data since the 2020 election, and my crude estimate suggests that perhaps 50% more Republicans have died than Democrats...but this estimate makes some big assumptions."
- more_corn 5y agoIt is not possible to collect party affiliation of those who die of COVID. County level is the closest we can come. Republican voting counties are 60% vaccinated. Democratically voting counties are 91% vaccinated. Covid vaccination is known to be 90+% effective at preventing death from covid. Covid deaths in Republican voting counties is 5.5X higher. That should be enough for party leadership to start realizing it’s bad strategy to encourage your most vocal supporters to behave in a way that will literally kill them. But, heck. I’m not a political strategist so what do I know? Maybe killing their people is part of some devious master plan I can’t figure out.
- DrScump 5y agoIt's worse than that, even. The entire article is about how Omicron threatens "red America". The data referenced is this: https://acasignups.net/21/12/17/request-how-delta-wave-has-ravaged-red-america-month-month https://acasignups.net/21/12/17/request-how-delta-wave-has-r... ... which is about Delta (and specifically omits Omicron) because... *there has not been a single death attributable to Omicron on the entire North American continent* (as of now). In fact, for the lone death of someone who tested positive for Omicron in the entire world (in the UK), Omicron wasn't specifically listed as the cause of death, even. There is no report of Omicron-caused death anywhere else in the world, to my knowledge. So, to imply "Omicron -> Death" is a ludicrous headline in the first place.
