The idea that opioids are addictive is a myth. People taking them are treating “pain” that isn’t diagnosed in the medical system. For example, joblessness. It’s an easy scapegoat for politicians to let them avoid dealing with harder structural problems.
- brennebeck 5y ago>The idea that opioids are addictive is a myth. They have literal physical withdrawals. The body becomes dependent on them. What else would you call that?
- rand_r 5y agoWithdrawal from opioids is overrated. It’s unpleasant, but that’s it. Unlike alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, which can literally kill you, opioid withdrawal is like a bad cold. So, yes there’s adaptations, but it’s way overrated compared to the media hype.
- hellbannedguy 5y agoYea, I agree, but will not go as far as saying they are not addictive. At high doses they are. Point me to a study claiming they arn't at high doses. I must have taken 10 antidepressants over the years. It all started with a run of the mill panic attack, but morphed into daily Generalized Anxiety. Debilitating, but according to my doctor not enough to get SSDI. My father died, and a nurse I knew saw how much I was drinking. She gave me a couple of Norcos. I finally felt normal. I didn't fall into begging/robbing for the drug. A doctor who heard my story prescribed bupenorpine off label for symptoms of depression. It's not nearly as good as vicodin, but I've been on it (same dose) for over decade. There are a lot of studies that conclude if you give opoids to certain people, they are fine with the original dose. (These studies were mainly performed in senior citizens, and rest homes though.) My point is opoids feel good, and can make a lousy life rosy. The consciousness patient will not seek higher, and higher doses, I think? We will probally never know now. I do have some accuantances whom are in extreme pain every day, and everyone of their doctors cut them off of opoids. No one is talking about the people who didn't abuse their meds, but were cut off, or told to go home and taper off, and take useless NASID's.
- DaftDank 5y agoI'm not following. I feel like you are trying to tell me the Sun isn't warm, and is in fact, cold. Opioids are most definitely addicting by any definition of the word.
