I've been building synths lately and the hardest part is getting them in tune, and to have multi-octave tracking. It's still hard these days, amazing that they were able to get it working without all the tooling and collective knowledge we have now.
- black_knight 5y agoWhat kind of synth building? From components? Do you mean tuning or calibration? Or designing the oscillators with decent tracking? I ask because I use some analogue synths, but they track quite well. Tuning is a hassle but not really hard. But calibration seems to be a different story.
- Mizza 5y agoI've been building from components, but now designing my own circuits. It's easy with chips like the 3340, but still requires calibration. With just basic opamps though, getting v/oct and good tracking is really, really hard and is really temperature sensitive, so requires mechanical work like epoxy resins and heatsinks, etc..
- black_knight 5y agoAwesome! Synth design is definitely something I would look into if I had more time for hobbies. I feel like hardware synths are really getting a revival these days.
