I remember way back when memes used to come in a variety of affects, expressing different things. Memes for humor, memes for grief, memes for libido, memes for political commentary, and yes, there's also of course memes for nothing other than establishing in-group/out-group.
But I can't help but notice every new 'meme' these days is a variation on "this thing is good" "this other thing is bad". It's the same format with the same intended message but with different images swapped in and out.
I think it might reflect the immense polarization of society combined with social media's general push for 'engagement' i.e. antagonization of each other. But I don't get why every new 'meme' these days has to draw some line in the sand.
