The ‘To the Moon’ Crash Is Coming
- ncmncm 5y agoThe only thing that will keep SpaceX from crashing and burning is Starlink. Having their own fleet to loft Starlink will keep costs low and provide a use for Starship/Superheavy until other people figure out what and why they want it. That will probably take years, provided it happens at all. Maybe Rocketlab will end up hitting the sweet spot of the open launch market, and Starship will be overprovisioned for almost everything. Or, the open launch market might end up wholly oversaturated, and most of the rocket companies will find too few customers to stay in business. To be clear: it is easy to come up with ideas for plenty of uses for massive launch capacity, but that doesn't mean the ideas will find takers in the short term.
- morpheos137 5y agoStarlink is not a profitable business.
- ncmncm 5y agoIt will be. Anyway until it gets competition. But its operating cost should still be lower. Starlink will also be a whole-planet-sized radio telescope. If you thought the pic of M87's black hole was impressive, wait and see.
- rasz 5y agoDoesnt have to be if DOD is riding on your back with cameras on all the sats etc.
- nopenopenopeno 5y agoRegardless, the comparison here is pretty meaningless. There is simply nothing else for these people to invest in.
